Non-profit child care services exist to provide a service to the community without financial gain. The research in Canada is clear that non-profit child care generally serves children and families better.
Non-Profits:
- Have a stronger mission to provide high-quality care - which has been found to be, on average, 10% higher than in commercial centres (Source: Cleveland, G. and Krashinsky (2004) The Quality Gap: A Study of Non-Profit and Commercial Child Care Centres in Canada);
- Put all of their resources back into their programs while commercial centres are set-up to make a profit for owners;
- Hire staff who are better trained, are paid better, and have more favourable child-staff ratios (clear link to quality);
- Have the ability to provide expanded services (i.e. anti-bullying campaigns);
- Are accountable to governance models that include parents, government, and taxpayers;
- Are developed in a way that responds to the needs of families and communities first.
